Early-acting competitive superiority in opiine parasitoids of fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae): Implications for biological control of invasive tephritid pests

چکیده

Understanding and predicting potential competitive outcomes is critical in the design of biological control programs when considering multiple agent introductions. Tephritid fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) include some most destructive pests vegetable crops worldwide. Parasitoid guilds fruit-infesting tephritids are dominated by opiines (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Opiinae) that have been main agents used for pest tephritids. All opiine parasitoids solitary koinobiont endoparasitoids attack host eggs or larvae emerge as adults from puparia. Thus, a initially attacked an egg-larval parasitoid can be subsequently larval parasitoid, providing ideal system to test Early-acting Competitive Superiority Hypothesis (i.e., first species occupying exploiting early stages has advantage over species). We reviewed literature on interspecific competition among fly parasitoids, which reveals strong evidence supporting early-acting superiority hypothesis through physiological suppression mechanisms. however, depend action well morphological characteristics direct physical their instars (e.g., size mandibles). discuss range ecological mechanisms facilitating coexistence interacting highlight consequences evidenced historical displacements introduced biocontrol Finally, we provide framework exploring role competition, other factors, selecting invasive

Automatic identification of fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae)

Fruit flies are pests of major economic importance in agriculture. Among these pests it is possible to highlight some species of genus Anastrepha, which attack a wide range of fruits, and are widely distributed in the American tropics and subtropics. Researchers seek to identify fruit flies in order to implement management and control programs as well as quarantine restrictions. However, fruit ...

An evaluation of alternative insecticides to diazinon for control of tephritid fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) in soil.

Diazinon has been used extensively in the past as part of California eradication programs for tephritid fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) as a soil drench, but it is being phased out for this purpose in the United States. Therefore, in this study, the toxicity of Platinum, Force, Admire, Regent, and Warrior was estimated after application to sand and soil as drenches for control of the Mediter...

Response of Three Hymenopteran Parasitoids Introduced for Fruit Fly Control to a Gall-Forming Tephritid, Procecidochares alani (Diptera: Tephritidae)

The response of three larval–pupal parasitoids, Diachasmimorpha longicaudata (Ashmead), Diachasmimorpha tryoni (Cameron), and Tetrastichus giffardianus Silvestri, to the Hamakua pamakani gall fly, Procecidochares alani L., was determined in the laboratory. We also observed responses of these parasitoids to their normal rearing hosts, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) andCeratitis capitata (Weidemann...

Egg–larval opiine parasitoids (Hym., Braconidae) of tephritid fruit fly pests do not attack the flowerhead-feeder Trupanea dubautiae (Dipt., Tephritidae)

We investigated the potential impact of three opiine tephritid fruit fly parasitoids: Fopius arisanus (Sonan), Fopius caudatus (Szépligeti) and Fopius ceratitivorus Wharton, on the non-target native Hawaiian tephritid, Trupanea dubautiae (Bryan), infesting flowerheads of the endemic Asteraceae shrub Dubautia raillardioides Hillebrand. The three species are the only known opiine fruit fly parasi...

Host breadth and parasitoids of fruit flies (Anastrepha spp.) (Diptera: Tephritidae) in Puerto Rico.

Twenty fruit species representing 12 families were collected from various regions in western Puerto Rico and monitored for the emergence of Anastrepha spp. pupae. We collected 14,154 tephritid pupae from 16 fruit species representing 10 families. The relative infestations of these fruits (pupae per kilogram of fruit) were recorded. Recorded host ranges were not in complete agreement with those ...
